With a history nearly as ancient as the county itself, the Knox County Fairgrounds spans 52 acres and offers a rich heritage. During the Scenic Drive event, these fairgrounds serve as an ideal destination, offering abundant free parking along with handicap accessibility. The sprawling fairgrounds boast buildings brimming with captivating displays, engaging demonstrations, and an array of diverse vendors, providing a vibrant and dynamic experience for all.

Steeped in history, these grounds once served as a training site for troops during the Civil War. In 1862, the 102nd Regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Army trained here, resulting in significant damage and the cancellation of that year's fair. Compensation was obtained from the state to address the damages, leading to enhancements and the acquisition of additional land. In 1943, the fair temporarily closed due to World War II, but swiftly resumed its operations the subsequent year.

The inaugural events at the grandstand featured harness racing, a tradition that persists annually during the fair. Today, you can still witness the historic bell, formerly employed to inaugurate races, suspended beneath the aged water tower that once served as a vital water source for steam engines.
